this site has lots of good recipes...

There is a TON of information on this site, so it may take a litle time to get through, but I found (and am still finding) it very helpful.

I made all my own baby food. I am a nutritionist and after my first daughter was a year old, I started my own company teaching onew moms how to make their own food! I now have classes, workshops and do consultations in the GTA and see over forty moms each week! So if you do want to learn how to make your own baby food, let me know. We are also about to start a delivery service and need moms to participate in the pilot program. Get in touch if you are interested!Lianne Phillipson-WebbFounder of Sprout Right and Nutrition Consultantwww.sproutright.com

I voted other because my baby never ate baby food. In fact, she would not eat anything from a spoon. So at 6 months I just chopped everything up small and made sure it was soft and she fed herself. It's called Baby Led Weaning (google it) and it's the easiest thing ever.
BTW the recommendation is to start solids at 6 months, not 4, or even 3 (!) If your baby is hungry at that age, he needs more milk.

I think it all depend on the individual baby. Some babies are ready before others. The times are a general guideline for the average baby, which not all babies fit!

The recommendations change every year and I know there are new studies every year but it is different for every child. My son nursed every hour for the first 5 months and that is why I made the decision to start him on solid foods. We've never had any trouble.

At what age did you or are you starting food? How long do they stay on rice cereal?
Wed, 09/17/2008 - 11:06 — Ashlea
I started with rice cereal when my son was almost four months. I started feeding him just once in the mornings and then when I started him on other grains I moved to a small portion for breakfast lunch and dinner. I'm still feeding him cereal in the mornings I just mix it with fruit now.
Sun, 09/21/2008 - 05:11 — lauratcallaghan
What other grains to you move to first??
Wed, 09/17/2008 - 11:02 — baby.gonnermann
I started my son on rice cereal at about 3 months. He was just eating and eating and eating. I started him on at dinner time only (it helped with night sleeping). Now I am starting to try him on other foods at about 6 months. It's best to just go with what your baby's needs are, though ... they will let you know.

I just have a question for all you moms (and dads) out there. I am just starting to give my son solids. I was just wondering what people started out with - fruits and vegetables?
Wed, 09/17/2008 - 00:34 — babychaks
I started my son on rice cereal then moved to other grains. I think that those are easiest on the stomach. If you are nursing, make sure you don't use Nestle baby food....it contains milk products. I used Heinz organic for my son. I think the first other food we fed him was squash. Then carrots.
Wed, 09/17/2008 - 10:58 — baby.gonnermann
Ya ... not breastfeeding. I've been feeding my son cereals for quite some time now. I have tried him with both squash and carrots now, but he absolutely HATES them!! He yells and holds his mouth shut until I change foods. It's very frustrating, but I guess I just have to persevere!
Thanks for all your comments!! They have been a great help :)

I started with Vegetables first. I'd heard that if you start with fruit, they might not want to eat the vegetables because they aren't as sweet. We started with Squash, carrots and peas.
Tue, 09/16/2008 - 12:54 — Ashlea
I did the same thing...I remember now that Jack's first food was carrots. He didn't like them at all and doesn't to this day but peas were popular before the fruit started. I waited a while before I gave him sweet potato too because it's really sweet.
Sun, 09/21/2008 - 05:07 — lauratcallaghan
Someone had told me sweet potato was a good starter because they often like it and then have a good experience with the first food. However, I was wondering like you if it's too sweet they may not like other veggies. Ahh, not sure which food to try first!!
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 12:32 — Ashlea
Apple sauce is always popular and there are a ton of apple mixtures that we started on like the apples and strawberries or raspberries. Just check the labels and make sure the food you have is for your little ones age group and you should be all set.

Once our child was ready for solids, we made all of her food. I would make variations on what we were having and blended it to a texture that she preferred. This, of course, changed over time :)
A good resource we used for making baby food was the book entitled, "The Baby's Table". This was coauthored by a teacher and a medical doctor in response to the many questions patients would bring about feeding their children along with their own needs. I found this an invaluable resource. A favorite my daughter (still) loves is the "Cheesy Chicken" recipe. We vary the vegetables in that recipe, but it is one of her all-time favorites.
We like to ensure that everything she gets is organic, as I've seen others post, so this way we can control what it is she's eating, the levels of salt and so forth. We make our own broth for these recipes (as well as our own) in a slow cooker as well - if anyone's interested in the "how to" of that, let me know! Happy to share.

My nephew refused to eat baby food so my sister in law would just blend up what they were eating.
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 11:04 — melljones
I made most of the food for my first and she never really eat any of it. This time I buy lots and make some and it is a better way for us. I make what I know he loves. It has saved lots of time and some money also.
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 00:55 — columbia
Before we were at the baby feeding stage I said I would make all my own but that went out the window. I liked having store bought for really busy days. My daughter still loves strained beans store bought but cringes at a fresh bean.

We have an organic farmer who delivers to our door once every two weeks, Wednesday night was our baby food night....we actualy ate healthier because of Katie and Andie, we would cut cook and freeze everything and be set for the next two weeks....hopefully when new baby comes the girls will want to help mommy make the baby food..
Sun, 09/21/2008 - 05:08 — lauratcallaghan
That's really cool that you have someone deliver. Great idea!
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 11:04 — melljones
Wow that is amazing. I will have to look into that.
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 19:52 — Ashlea
Gotta love the little helpers!

After spending hours steaming and pureeing meat and vegetables, my daughter gagged repeatedly when she tasted my food and refused to eat it. I tasted it and it was delicious. So, she had store bought organic and I ate the homemade baby food!! True story.
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 11:05 — melljones
The things we do as mothers. Who would have ever thought?
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 12:48 — Ashlea
I really wanted to make my own food...even just puree fruits but I just couldn't find the time.
Thu, 09/11/2008 - 21:11 — Lillylady
After I would puree the food, I poured it into ice cube trays. After it was frozen it went into a baggie. The ice cube size was a perfect serving, and I rarely had to make more than one batch of each food.
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 13:31 — Ashlea
Good for you mommas that make you're own food...you're better women then me!
Thu, 09/11/2008 - 20:47 — Alessia
I had started off making all my own baby food but my daughter wouldn't eat it. I even invested in a small blender so that it was easier to make small and fresh batches. It was something about the texture that she didn't like...no matter how hard I tried to get it super smooth. When I tried the store bought, she couldn't get enough.
Thu, 09/11/2008 - 21:07 — Lillylady
I always added lots of water as I was blending food, made the texture much like store bought.
