"Mummy...there are magic peas in here!" my daugher Sadie sings as she shucks her first pea in her 2 years on earth. She thinks that the adventure of opening up her own peas and eating them is magical.
It reminded me that kids really are a bit disconnected from how our vegetables come out of the ground and wind up on their plates. Sadie had only ever experienced peas as they have been shucked and steamed and served up. So this summer I've made a commitment to taking the kids to a local family-run market - the amazing and fresh Herlee's.
As we pass the fields, we talk about how the food we will buy at the market is grown right here in our community and how by making local choices, we are helping local farmers and that less energy is used to transport fruits and veggies to us. And the kids are engaged! They ask questions of the staff at the market, they get all excited when something new is available (cherries and corn...yeah!).
This summer, make a commitment to shop and eat local. In fact, this week is a great time to get involved...just check out www.eatrealeatlocal.ca for more info! And those of you who are on Twitter, join me and Tweet about it tomorrow and help raise money for a great green cause!
