As a nurse on maternity leave, I am struggling with this decision. I have always been vaccinated for everything under the sun because of my profession, but now that my 7 month old is hear, I find myself second guessing everything. I agree that the vaccine was pushed out too quickly and long term effects are not known. I've also been reading about links to ALS, MS and other very scary autoimmune diseases with this vaccine. I have no idea if these claims are legitimate or not. I am waiting for my family doctor to return from vacation to discuss all these factors with her to make the final decision.

I was very frightened by the vaccine and I spoke to the public health unit here in our county and she informed me that becuase this virus they are injecting is a dead virus strand that it is not possible to contract nor spread anything in relation to this vaccination. With that she also told me that this vaccine has been used in the UK and Australia for years, I am still on the fence in some aspects but my daughters pediatrician was very adamint that she recieve this. She is 9 months old and was born with a non operative bowel obstruction and with those health concerns he was still very much for this. Not sure if the dead virus part gives you any peace of mind, I know it did for me and thought i would share with you. good luck with your decision.

I was initially hesitant as well but after speaking with two different pediatricians about it, we decided to go for it. Neither physician even hesitated to recommend it. They both gave a resounding "YES", saying that the cost of the illness is too high to risk it, especially for small children. One went so far as to say that the media is creating a controversy over this vaccine that does not exist within the medical community. She had every confidence in the vaccine, saying that "we have been making vaccines for decades - these people know what they are doing". She made some good arguments and drove home the point that the risks are simply too high. Having already seen my child in the ICU for 3 months due to prematurity, I have no desire to ever go down that road again. We're all vaccinated because for us, it wasn't worth the risk and I received all the medical reassurance that I needed. Hopefully you get the answers that you are seeking from your physican soon.

Noone here will be getting the shot. I am just not comfortable with a vaccine that only took 2 weeks to develop. They are also not aware of any long term side effects. This whole issue is so scary. On a side note, we do not and have not ever gotten the flu shot here ever. Did you know if you previously had the flu shot you're more likely to contract H1N1?! Funny how everything is so connected.

We have been doing research for the past few days and it's now a yes. In Peel, the clinics don't open until Nove 2nd, so we are traveling to vaughan to get them vaccinated this afternoon.
