I have been lucky enough to have great mom friends almost from day 1, well actually more like day 42 when my moms groups met for the first time with our 6 week old babies. I would have been lost without the total strangers that came to my house that day with nothing in common except that we all had just had a baby with the same midwife clinic. Almost seven years to the day we are still friends and many of these women are now my best friends.
Recently I have connected with whole other group of amazing women (and some men) through Twitter. I don't meet them once a week for coffee, in fact most of them I've never met IRL (in real life) but I connect with them multiple times a day, often multiple time an hour and have built a whole new community of people I would again likely never have met.
I have found myself explaining what Twitter is and the power of it over and over again lately from my mother to celebrities like Project Runway’s Tim Gunn (I actually set up his Twitter account TimGunn_1 for him at a party). Most people think it is a huge waste of time and just "don't get it".
To that I say look at it this way, Facebook is for connecting with the friends you know, on my personal Facebook page I only accept friend requests from people I actually know. Our Wee Welcome Facebook page is for those who know Wee Welcome.
Twitter is for connecting with the friends you have yet to meet. Think of it as huge online cocktail party. If you walked into a cocktail party and only talked about yourself and didn't engage with anyone you likely wouldn't leave that party having made any new connections right? The same goes for connecting online through Twitter (this goes for other online communities like WeeWelcome.ca as well) you need to engage and join in the conversation to build relationships with people.
So how does Twitter work, well here are our Twitter 101 tips to get you started. What will you get out of it? Well that is really up to you. Personally I have met "my people" as my new friend Theresa Albert (that I met through Twitter) would say. I have a group of people online that get me and no matter what time of day there are people online to share, rant and laugh with.
Instead of my own vlog this week I am sharing a video that another friend of mine through Twitter @nummiesbras (that is her Twitter name because she owns Nummies Nursing Bras) put together. She put a Tweet out looking for moms to help her with a video for moms and the response was amazing. I too saw the Tweet, RT'd (retweeted) it and participated. Check it out it is powerful stuff, Reflections of Motherhood.
I have no idea where the world on social media is going but one thing is for sure it is not going away. If you love meeting new people and engaging with them then maybe you too will "find your people".
I'd love you to follow me @weewelcome and PLEASE tweet me to say hi when you do!

I watched the video and loved it also. The advice was so perfect and what a great way to present it. Truly all the stuff you just wish you knew.
You looked beautiful! And great advice. Everyone in the video had such good advice - makes me think what would i have told my self back in that innocent time?!
Hey Maureen!
I just watched the video! LOVED it. I was fighting back tears over here. Maybe I'm extra emotional because I'm pregnant and am feeling all kinds of extra emotions again. What a great video! So many of the sayings are so true to me.
I am really getting into the twitter thing and really enjoying it. It is nice to be able to connect to other parents and businesses. I'm just getting the hang of twitter but I do like it!
Thanks for sharing that video... I'm going to go watch it again now!! sniff sniff.
